Macs DO Crash

August 16th, 2006 by EyeOnWiner

Dave finally posts something that I agree with and about which I have no quibbles. He’s right. All computers crash. Period.

That’s why its irresponsible for Apple to advertise that Macs don’t crash. I’m not a lawyer, but it seems fraudulent to me. And as a programmer, it’s really tempting fate to make such a claim. Bad Murphy karma. Put it this way, if you were a pilot, would you fly a plane if the manufacturer said it can’t crash? How much faith would you have in their support system if you thought they really believed that??

Spot on.

    Wait. Does Apple say their computers don’t crash, or do they tweak the fact that Windows remains surprisingly unstable (by modern standards) I support both platforms and I remain surprised at the blue screens of even well kept XP and 2000 boxes. I can count on one hand the Mac kernel panics I’ve tended to. I’m not saying Macs don’t crash, but Apple can fairly tweak MS on this point, unless I missed the agreeably untenable “Apples don’t crash” message.

    What the hell is “Bad Murphy karma?” “Tempting fate?” Wha?!?

  2. Winer == muppet says:

    I’ve had a Mac for 3 years and I’ve had one kernel panic which was the result of plugging in a dodgy webcam made in Belarus. (Not that Belarus implies dodgyness, but it aint Canon if you know what I mean).

    Computers crash. Everyone knows that. But supposed “developers”, ‘software engineers” etc. which Winer claims to be, can see at a glance that Mac OS-X is designed using academic rigor as opposed to Windows which is built for business, profit, and “getting-it-out-the-door”ness.

    Winer I’m sure is just baiting like Dvorak does. If a Mac is crashing once a week, it’s a hardware fault. Either that, or he’s so clueless he manages to crash his Mac once a week using Firefox by putting some toast in the SuperDrive…
