MCN Liner-Notes

December 31st, 2007 by EyeOnWiner

Dave published a podcast this morning, so I thought I’d try something new (to EOW).

  • 00:24 – Dave starts doing a horrible French accent.
  • 00:48 – French accent ends, thank god.
  • 01:19 – After much babble, Dave introduces the question: “What does the at-sign (@) mean in twitter.” (Dave says this is too complicated to type out)
  • 01:45 – We have our first ‘Twitter is just RSS’ analogy.
  • 02:15 – 30 seconds later, an unnecessary ‘river of news aggregator’ reference
  • 02:25 – Dave is so enamored by his eloquent phrasing of something that he has to repeat it.
  • 03:15 – Start of a long stream-of-consciousness-style babble about twitter followers-to-followees ratio, all leading up to…
  • 09:24 – “Look at how big my e-peen is!, I have like 3,800 followers! I’m sooo A-list!” (paraphrased)
  • 09:55 – Back-handed compliment to someone who is being followed by a lot of people, but doesn’t follow anyone… sounds like Dave feels jilted.
  • 10:30 – Dave wants someone to pay attention to the fact that he has a lot more people following him than he follows, as a measure of his A-list status.
  • 11:02 – “Now, on to what does the at-sign do”, finally… we get what we came for!
  • 11:16 – “The at-sign is a way for you to address a twitter post to someone who does not follow you.”
  • 12:10 – Dave forgets how to spell his own name. Unfortunately, it’s not because he puts an “h” after the “W”.
  • 12:15 – To show us how this works (since we’re simpletons who need examples) he reads us a twit from someone who is really looking forward to the windows version of FlickrFan. Heh.
  • 12:20 – Tangent about FlickrFan.
  • 12:45 – Re-explains how the at-sign works.
  • 13:40 – Going back to his the fanboy twitter, Dave is shocked (shocked!) to find out how important dizpoddir is! (You can actually hear his ego inflating in the podcast as he mis-reads “Directory” as “Director”)
  • 14:25 – Catches his mistake, realizes the person isn’t some bigwig at Disney, ego deflates a little.
  • 14:42 – “That is a very good way to get me to follow you, be part of my little world, show me that you’re interested in what I’m doing.” I haven’t ever seen a clearer statement of Dave’s desire to insulate his echo-chamber.
  • 15:45 – Dave says that the at-sign confuses him. Makes perfect sense for him to be the one explaining it to others, then!
  • 16:00 – Plug for Scripting News
  • 16:35 – Plays a song, ghetto style, by pointing his mic at his speakers.
  • 18:00 – The sweet, merciful end.

So there you have it… and 18 minute podcast, ostensibly to explain how ‘@’ works in twitter, but he spends easily 4x as much time stroking his own ego. This podcast could’ve been done in 3 minutes.

Note that “The at-sign is a way for you to address a twitter post to someone who does not follow you.” is about 90 characters… not only was it simple enough to write-out, it was so simple that it could’ve been twittered.

EyeOnWiner… listening to Dave’s drivel, so you don’t have to.
