How… how on earth can Winer write something like this:
[Guy Kawasaki is] the first person to question his own thinking if someone says he’s wrong. I’ve seen him do it, and I was totally impressed. People like that figure stuff out. People who don’t want to learn about bugs in their thinking go through life with a lot of bugs.
How does he write something like that and still behave the way he does?
There have been entire blogs (like this one) dedicated to criticizing his way of thinking, many of whom feel that they have to be anonymous in order to avoid
his especially nasty brand of attack blogging. Yet, nothing ever changes.
Is that because he does question his way of thinking and just decide that he’s right, or is it because he immediately discredits everyone who disagrees with him unless they preface that disagreement with glowing praise?
We joke here but in all seriousness I think it does go back to McD’s post earlier this week. The man is pathologically narcissistic and as such is completely lacking empathy. I really believe he can not see outside himself to understand what someone else is feeling.
If you haven’t you should head over to Wikipedia and read their page on narcissism. It’s so on the nose that it’s scary.
People’s mind are surprizingly different. I like following Winer for this reason… for the big stoiry arc’s. Winer and Adam Curry, Winer and Calacanis, Winer and Arringtom Winer… they are overlapping stories with a beginning middle and protracted end.
I wasn’t really tuned in for Winer and O’Reilly but the archives are out there.
Winer and Loic Lemur is just starting… Dave is hoping for stock. Go figure. Ideas are worth something, right? Work is for the pedestrians.
I sense a Winer-Lemuer flameout in the near future… should start a pool.
To be fair to Winer he explained that he likes Arrington and dislikes TechCrunch. That’s a valid position. But too often the person and company/service get mixed up in his mind.
“The Mind Boggles….” and then stumbles: 7 days without anyone watching Winer?
He’s going to hate Google’s Open Social API’s if they can’t be worked using XML-RPC like interfaces… otherwise he probably won’t be able to make them work if they use another approach. It should be worth “watching” to see him realize that what many call programming is something more complex and difficult then text-based parsing and scripting.
If anything like AtomPub is used… it will get really ugly and snarky because Dave will NEVER allow Atom into his “Old Frontier” and who would help him understand the Spec anyway or code the required UserTalk Verbs.
No…. Any Google embrace of Atom in Open Social will start a new era of the Format Wars: In a galaxy Far, Far, Away… (jpeg of the DeathStar).
The Anti-Google campaign is cranking up today… Dave is asking for insider dirt.
This should play out over a good 6 month story arc.
The API for Open Social should be rolled out soon. It will probably be complex… ideally, there will be sample code in all the major web programing paradigms… but one lonely “open sourced” platform will get no love.
Maybe the i.m.orchard will toss Dave a little free consulting. Maybe not.
Sorry the OpenSocial API’s ARE out and they are based upon Atom:
“This document assumes that you understand the general ideas behind Atom and the Google data APIs protocol.”
“Winer Watching” will be better tahn any TV serialized drama… a cross between “Don Quixote” (starrg Robert Scoble as “Sancho Panza”) and “Death of a Salesman”: “I invented web app API”s and they didn’t even think of asking me for guidance… and now we can ALL watch them fail for their audacity.”
PS> Dave doesn’t understand why journalists don’t break the news via twitter. So, he can get right on the story. Sancho twitters Dave when he’s “reporting”.
“Seek first to understand.”
OK… I have $10,000 that could be given to a person or group that creates a complete set of Atom/AtomPub verbs for Frontier in UserTalk.
NOTE: Look up the word could.
My point… even if the capability was there… Dave wouldn’t use their version of RSS… and he won’t let them extend or modify his.
OpenSocial can’t be truly Open without Dave involved… can it?
“But Google is keeping people like me far away, which suggests that there may actually be no “there” there.” – Dave Winer
There’s some there there… It’s based upon Atom and thus… FUD Wars.
Dave will now do 6 months of Elmer FUD on Google and anyone that supports the Atom-based OpenSocial API’s with applications that… ahem… allow users to get and send their data into and out/of a large CMS service. What’s NOT to like in Google trying to create new “standards” for what has become a huge problem for users?
Sometimes, Dave operates against the interests of users.
“OpenSocial can’t be truly Open without Dave involved… can it?”
More importantly,
OpenSocial can’t be truly Social WITH Dave involved — the anti-social drama generator that he is and all…
So, QED, the Atom-based API’s are not only the key to its openness, but its Sociability.
We should count how many anti-google posts Dave writes before he mentions any of the key words:
format Atom Ruby (as in Sam) Pilgrim (as in Mark) Bray )as in the vocal stylings of the donkey)
Curently, Dave just wants to know if all these Google Buddies are going to give users their data… He’s hoping to organize the users against the GoolePlex and get them to reject applications that allow them to read and write to/from Orkut, MySpace, LiveJournal, SalesForce.com, etc because… because… because… Google must be capturing their data? because truly open developers aren’t invited to the Code Camps?
Oh well, let’s just wait and see where the madness takes us.
Dave Winer has comments enabled.
There IS a difference between a critic and a troll.
Dave generates a lot of criticism,,, but real trolls are often beaten back in a good comment pit. Scoble gets dozens of comments and MANY are critical. He engages critics and I respect that.
