Dave Primes his Sycophants

January 14th, 2008 by EyeOnWiner

Everybody GET READY! Dave is releasing a NEW APP.

Maybe there won’t be millions of users, but my goal is to bootstrap a community of networked living rooms. For that I don’t need more than a couple hundred households who want to play and I already have that.

I will soon tell you more about the new app, and if you’re paying attention on my Twitter feed, you’ll get a pretty clear idea of where this is going. It’s all about communities, social features and big media.

He’s either tremendously enamored with himself, supremely disappointed by the “success” of FlickrFan… or both. This is easily the most pitiful thing I’ve seen on Scripting News in years. I feel bad for him.

  1. Now that FlickrFan is being repositioned as the first application in a series to be deployed on the OPML Editor, as strange a configuration as ever conceived in desktop software, a note from the Radio UserLand customer support forum is funny:

    http://radio.userland.com/discuss/msgReader$39120

The user’s question, “Does anyone know why FlickrFan app designed by Dave Winer doesn’t work in Radio[?],” can be answered thusly:

Because Winer’s such a hack he must release a giant object database/scripting environment with each new script it runs, since that’s the only way it has any chance of actually working.

Looking back at Dave Winer’s twitter feed I find:

1/12/08: “Official leak: FlickrFan is about to get a new baby beta brother. :-)

1/12/08: ” finishing the interfaces for Amazon SimpleDB. Now that everything is (or seems to be) “

    1/08/08: ” I ordered 10 red Pentel Sign Pens”

    Clear as mud…

    My guess?

He’s mastered moving jpg images (FlickerFan).

He’s probably going for audio (Dave’s “PodCatcher”) with this release.

And targeting video files after that.

    It’s sycophant.

    Sorry for being so annoying.

  4. EyeOnWiner says:

True enough. Not sure why spell check didn’t pick that up. Thanks.

Burn! I’m watching the Stevenote at Macworld, looks like Jobs updated the Apple TV, a new feature: flickr photo streams. I guess we’ll see what FlickrFan looks like when it is designed by professionals.

I probably missed something, but didn’t Dave say he’d stop blogging last year?
