Dave’s Reddit Echo Chamber
January 29th, 2008 by EyeOnWinerI’ve said it before, and I’m sure I’ll say it again, but Dave is a huge hypocrite. I left a comment on this post yesterday, asking why not just let the moderation take care of the “abusive” entries, and suggesting that maybe he didn’t need another echo chamber. That comment, of course, did not show up. (Update: It was eventually approved… after this post went up.)
Earlier, someone posted a link to BSM’s post here about Dave’s heightened discourse to the Reddit channel… that link was taken down… but not before EOW got about 50 referrals from it. Heh. I guess Dave doesn’t want any attention on the twits that he uses to try to incite his 4,000 followers to violence.
All of this makes perfect sense for a petulant child who can neither articulate his own opinions in the face of intelligent criticism nor simply concede the fact that he has made a mistake. When you contrast that, however, with twits like this one, it seems very strange:
he said he didn’t want to offend me. i wish more people would air disagreement. set an example. keeping quiet is *not* a good thing.
He wants you to air your disagreement… but he’s going to do everything in his power to keep you quiet, so good luck with that!
What’s really interesting, though, is that if Dave weren’t such a monster (socially), there wouldn’t even be a need for this site. We’d all air our disagreements on our individual blogs, 1/100th the people would read them, and Dave could just ignore the criticism. Instead, he attacks people, denigrates them, tries to harass them into agreeing with him, and is, generally, a flaming asshole… so we have to collect under pseudonyms to avoid having to deal with his fanboys and smears. The net result is actually MORE harmful to him with one caveat: we don’t get to use the clout of our own names and reputations within the blogosphere unless we have enough clout to withstand Dave’s attacks… and not many folks do.
It’s no wonder he’s so interested in finding out who the authors of this site are… you can’t attack someone you can’t find.

Yes. Occassionally you see someone move into Dave’s world and live to regret the attempt at friendship or a professional relationship.
The man is just not good at empathy in any form… and he escalates rapidly into attack mode.
But for that to matter you have to have some issue that you care about that Dave’s impacts with his work: standards for web interoperability for example (the RSS wars) or the financial aspects of web publishing (blogging). Otherwsie, he’s a rather interesting internet crank and pseudo-authority on any issue he chooses to write about.
I read him religiously and actually have trouble finding anyone else (other then the loyal readership here) that give a flying fuck about any of this. My wife thinks my interest is pathological. There are days when I’m sure she’s probably right. Am I trying to fix my father when I want to fix Winer? Don”t answer that. You don’t know me well enough to even guess. Let’s keep it that way.

It looks like the Reddit experiment is over. His posted items, which were identified as from user “scripting,” now have author “[deleted]“.
