‘Honeypot for Idiots’
January 31st, 2008 by EyeOnWinerDave’s own personal Reddit failed, and Dave has declared it dead. Of course, it didn’t fail because people just didn’t feel like using Dave’s private echo chamber… no, certainly not! It failed because of “idiots”. (So much for not getting personal, right Dave?)
The idiots want to rule the Reddit I started for Scripting News readers. I couldn’t figure out how to delete it, and while trying, I deleted my account
As best I can tell, the sum total of the activities of “idiots” consist of a) the link to EOW questioning the level of Dave’s political discourse, b) a link to a picture of a penis announcing the end of the experiment, c) people moderating down the links Dave submitted, and d) people not really using it.
With respect to (b), that seems to have appeared after Dave decided the experiment was over, so that’s not really determinative. It seems unlikely that one link to EOW would really bother him that much, and while I think that (c) probably irritated him, my guess is that the real reason that Dave is trying to shut the doors on the experiment is (d).
He’s just mad that he set up what he thought would be a neat little playground and nobody came to play on the jungle gym… and instead of just quietly closing it down or just saying “Well, it might have been neat, but it didn’t take”, he has to blame it on someone else.

Wait, did he actually accidentally delete his own account? Dave Winer?
That’s hilarious.

I concur. I’m sure it was a traffic thing. The strange this is, he really did nothing to promote it besides a single blog post. It’s really quite amazing (I was going to say self-involved, but I thought I’d be gentle — oops!), to think he could announce it and have it catch on immediately.
Another problem is that it is/was off-site. Maybe if it was integrated into his blog it would have had half a chance. Like a well-place box on the right-hand column of his site.

No kidding. Especially if stories Dave up-voted ended up in his newsfeed.
That would actually be pretty cool.

Traffic? I don’t get that… he’d be happy with a dozen loyal follows.
He wants people to give him links that he’d enjoy and he didn’t like the ones he got. So, forget it. Move on. A nice little fine tuned meme tracker was his vision but “idiots” showed up. People with poor taste.
Now… will someone at reddit actually manually kill the page or can we use it? Links that keep the eye on “scripting”? If Dave won’t… we should.
