This comment was made recently on Brad Fitzpatrick's blog entry about Dave Winer and RSSCloud:

As someone who has known Dave well for almost 30 years, I have to agree with Kragen that the best approach is to ignore him on this. His legacy is the most important thing in the world to him, so no compromise that doesn't leave him as the "inventor" of whatever new standard emerges will satisfy him. He can't be reasoned with, because he isn't using reason here. In his mind he is being screwed once again by a big company that is trying to take credit for his work. Whether it is true or not, and I think not, that is the movie that is playing out in his head. It can't be stopped. It can't be made "part of the process." It can only be ignored.

One other thing, Brad. If you do try talking with him, NEVER even imply that you know what Dave is thinking, because he doesn't believe it is possible for anyone to know what he is thinking.

For the record, I give Dave a large amount of credit for the adoption of RSS, OPML, blogging, and podcasting, but I don't think he "invented" any of them. I don't believe anyone invents things any more on the Internet. They just act as midwives. So, to continue the metaphor, Brad. If you want your standard to be born in a viable form, just go silent with Dave. He will get bored and move on. He always does.

- Adam Green

For some reason the comment has been deleted, but Green has Winer pegged.

With Dave the fuzzy logic never stops:

"...I don't guarantee that I will never sell a position on the list. But I will never put a feed on the list that I wouldn't put there if they didn't pay."

Consider the ethics and logic of that policy.

And how about this:

"3. I try not to influence editorial content through my choices ... but if it influences the writers I will remove it immediately."

Like if they write about Dave or his hobby projects favorably he will remove the feed? What about if they criticize him?

Dave off his meds. And no one should be surprised Anil Dash approved of Dave's little hate rant, at least if they've paid attention. That's pretty much Anil Dash in a nutshell.

That post is definitely the work of an asshole. People who make wildly inaccurate Hitler analogies in politics are ignorant and foolish boors. That doesn't mean they -- or their children! -- deserve to die for it.

Winer digs himself in deeper with this comment today: "If you fail to understand Hitler, you deserve to get Hitler. Their only sin, beyond stupidity, is their inability to imagine that it could happen here."

If making stupid Nazi analogies means you deserve to die in a concentration camp, take a look at what Winer said when a Gnomedex speaker called Karl Rove a Nazi in 2007: "He just called Karl Rove a Nazi. Hey I like this guy."

I was happy to see the snarky "and no, you won't be able to bring your assault rifle" at the end-- Winer and I went at it in his comments section on his last post on the matter, which ended up in him banning my disqus identities. I think he just might have been talking to me...
